Cloning and de-extinction - Sumuree & Stanley

 Cloning and De-extinction

DNA is one of the most important things in your life, and when you unravel your DNA it is as long as the earth’s orbit around the sun but times that 6 times. Anyway this subject is about bringing extinct species back to life, and also cloning conservation species.

What is Cloning?
Cloning is taking DNA from any living animal then cloning the DNA. The first animal to be cloned is the Dolly Sheep who was born/cloned in July 5, 1996 and died in February 14, 2003. But there is a con to cloning just because there were multiple other animals that had been cloned but died very quickly, for example one of them where a Ox named the gaur, who only lived for 2 weeks then perished into heaven. There is also something called natural cloning. Natural cloning can occur when an embryo is split up into 2 parts which makes twins, or it could split into 3, 4, ect.

What is de-extinction?

De-extinction is bringing an extinct animal back to life. De-extinction for a Moa is where you take some DNA from the Moa’s fossils then afterwards create an egg with the DNA and put that egg inside an ostrich to create a new Moa/Ostrich thingy..

Should we de-extinct the Moa?? Yes because….
The pros for de-extincting the Moa is because the Moa could be used as a food resource and could be used as clothes too. Another reason is that a Moa is a native bird to New Zealand, also the Moa could kill and eat the possums and other animals that the british people came with, which will protect the other native animals.

Should we de-extinct the Moa?? No because….
The cons for de-extincting the Moa is because the Moa would disrupt the food chain by eating the insects and food for other animals, it could also be very very expensive and there is a 50% chance that it will fail and a 50% chance that it will succeed. The other reason is that if it does get let into the wild us humans will try and hunt it again which will make it.... Extinct! (yay)

Camp 2020

Monday

Last term the kia manawanui went to camp raglan for 5 days. The announcement to camp came out 5 weeks earlier to get ready and stuff. When it came to the day to leave for camp, we all met up in the hall for the principal to make his speech about how to act, how to treat others, and how to behave and such. After the principal finished his speech our parents/caregivers helped us pack our bags to place it on the bus, I had my aunty and sister to help me with my bags. We placed our bags inside the bus and said goodbye to our parents/caregivers. I was unhappy to leave my family because I've never been that far away from them/I've never been to a camp. After we packed everything and said goodbye we jumped on the bus, and I sat by myself. The bus ride was a little boring to be honest, because there was a lot of noise and movement in the bus. After 2 or 3 hours we stopped at a gas station to empty our bladders and get some fresh air.

We finally got to the camp and dropped our bags in the hall/basketball court thing, and walked to the main hall where we got told the rules and expectations of the camp. The owners of the camp’s names are Jenny and Tony, they showed us around the camp. After that we settled in our dorms, I was with Lino, Matthew and Kymarni in a dorm. We finished settling in and had a little bit of free time. I hung out with Litia and Josephine in my free time and explored the camp with them. We got called to meet up near the girls' dorms to go to the beach. Most of us asked the teachers to swim at the beach but they said “no, the waves are too strong and it will pull you out into the ocean meaning it's dangerous”. After that we went on our walk to the beach, it was kinda long but cool at the same time. We reached our destination and took a look at the beautiful view.

What is the importance of video games?

What is the importance of video games?

Some people might think video games are bad and that it will rot your brain. But video games can help you with survival skills, creating new friends, learning new things, fighting skills and more! But it also can be bad too like being too addicted to the game, you can have sore red eyes by just looking at the screen for too long, bad posture, etc.

Video games are important because it can be a job for some people. For example pewdiepie known as Felix. He is one of the top gamers in the world, for his humorous “Let’s Play” videos on youtube. By playing video games on twitch and youtube and earn you a lot of money. People who make the games take months or even years.

Video games can help with making new friendships, by meeting new people online! Video games also help with social skills and confidence.

Video games give you a choice to be offline or online. Offline is where you aint using any internet and online is where you are using the internet and you can meet people. But online games can be hell, there could be some pedos, online daters, hackers, bad language etc. This means pedos can act as a different person, online daters can date you without knowing your real age, hackers can grab your IP address and find out where you live.

Video games are also a great source of entertainment and learning. This helps with not being bored and learning something new everyday. Like survival games, they can help with memory, navigation skills, heath skills, etc.

In my opinion video games are very important, because they can do a lot to help you.

Why is it important to learn to swim?

Why is it important to learn to swim?

New Zealand is an island in the pacific ocean with 15,000 km of coastline and over 700 beaches. In 2017 there were 92 people who have died from drowning in NZ. It is important to swim because when you're out in the ocean with no swimming experiences, you don't have any confidence and you can’t find land, you're basically dead. But if you do have the confidence, you can swim, you can find land by swimming.

Swimming is actually a cool activity/sport to do! For example you can swim for competitions, you can swim for fun, you can swim for strength, etc. Swimming can also help with muscles and weight for example it's a good sport to get in shape. You don't know you could be the next best swimmer.

Swimming it's very easy to learn too! Children do it all the time. Some people can't learn how to swim because the swimming lessons might be too expensive, they might have Aquaphobia [a fear of swimming], etc.  (I have not finished, but ok.)

“Hey, are y’all ready?” asked Sakura.

“Yeah, i think so-” replied Kirigiri.

“WAIT I NEED TO GET MY PARACHUTE!!!” yelled Himari.
“Okay be fast tho-” said Sakura.

They all were planning to go Skydiving together because the lockdown had just ended. “Okay I'm ready,” said Himari. “Ok, does everyone have their things?” asked Sakura. “yes sir” replied Kirigiri. They all went outside to the car and locked the house door. They got in the car and Sakura drove to the skydiving place. “Hello and welcome!” Said the guard. “Hai” replied Sakura. They parked and went inside the skydiving place. “Hello there, are you the one who booked to skydive today?” asked the Skydiving instructor “Yes I am” replied Sakura

“Okokok, follow me!” said the skydiving instructor. Sakura, Himari and Kirigiri followed the skydiving instructor and the driving instructor led them to a room with a huge tv. “This room is just to tell you how to skydive,” said the instructor. They all sat down and the instructor played the video.

The Circus (narrative)

5 friends were planning to hangout but they don't know where to go “OH, we should go to the circus” said Jeff “okay, but we should go at night because it's better” said Alice. They all agreed to go to the circus at night. The friends were planning to meet each other at Alice's house. They all met up at 6:00pm at Alice's house then got an uber to the circus, no uber showed up but a 1978 car showed up they all were weirded out cause they never seen a car like that in real life, but they got in anyway. 3 minutes later they were on the road to the circus and all their technology disappeared into the air “uh… guys where is my phone?” said Becka confusingly. “OMG WHERE IS MY PHONE?!?” shouted annie. They arrived at the circus and a clown came running to them. “OMG I HATE CLOWNS!!” said james “WElCOME tO ThE CiRcuS *heheh*” said the clown “okay?” said Jeff “ThEre Are DolLs, FoOD, ClOWnS, A ForTune TeLlEr aND mOrE *hehEHEHEhEHE*” said the clown freakley. They walked into the circus and saw colorful lights, people laughing, kids running around and big circus tents. They all planned to go get food first then go see the BIG show. They all walked to the concession stands and brought some Pretzels and some popcorn.

They got their food and went to the show. As they sat down and waited for the show to happen they got a weird feeling that something bad is going to happen. The lights turned off and it was pitch black “WELCOME TO THE SHOW” shouted the speaker, The lights FLASHED! And everyone was dizzy except for the 5 friends. “GUYS? Y’ALL THERE?” said Annie

“YEAH BUT JAMES IS GONE-” said Alice

 “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!” shouted James

“HELP GUYS” he shouted, they all ran outside to see what happened and James was nowhere to be seen, but a little note on the ground saying “plan: kill all” “OMG OMG OM-” said Becka as she got snatched. “WHAT IS HAPPENING!, SHOULD WE LEAVE OR SAVE THEM?” said Jeff.

“UH, SAVE THEM OF COURSE THEY ARE OUR FRIENDS” said Annie. They all split up to go and find James and Becka.

ALICE SCREAMS “OMG- GUYS AHHHHHHHHHH”

“ALICE??” Jeff shouted

“oh no she's gone too” said Jeff both got captured “AHHHHHH” yelled Jeff and Annie. They all ended up tied to a carousel “OMG- GUYS?” yelled Becka “I’M GOING TO ROLL THE DICE OF DEATH AND THE NUMBER THAT IT LANDS ON IS GOING TO DIE RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW” shouted the clown. The clown rolled the dice of death and the number it landed on is ‘3’ “OO THIS IS A GOOD SHOW HAHAHAHAHAHA” laughed the clown “YOU-” said the clown
“UH... GUYS” said Annie
“HAHAHAHAHA YOU'RE THE ONE-” said the clown. The clown grabbed her gun and SHOT her in the heart “AH-” said Annie as she fell on the floor “AHHHH OMG- ANNIE” said Jeff
“SO ANYONE ELSE WANNA DIE??” said the clown
“UH… NO WHY WOULD WE WANT TO-” said Becka
“OHH SO YOU WANNA GIVE ME ATTITUDE??” said the clown.

Someone with their motorcycle came crashing in the circus SHOOTING the clowns then untying the 4 friends “HURRY COME WITH ME” said the masked person. They all followed the person to a safe house “uh why are we trusting him?” said James “he killed the clowns who KILLED our friend, so yes we have to trust him” said Becka, they all walked into a room with 4 other people

King and Country.

Your summaries:

Mariah: On the 3 of August 1915.Rongo would always witier a letter and Rongo brother Rahia would always read it out loud and it would be sent on may and sent from Egypt.Tipu has heard Rongo’s letter countless times, and knows the words by heart. Both places Tipu has never seen. Because he has never been out.

Hope: On the 3rd of August 1915 Rahia was reading Rongos letter so he was told to read aloud. The letter was written in May and sent from Egypt. It also traveled from england. Those places Tipu has never seen before. Tipu has seen Rongos letter so many times he even knows it off by heart. Tipu could sense his mother leaning towards him. He knew what she would say, “The British in Egypt” and yet the British had taken another land from the native people. Whaea’s voice has been stony and hard and her eyes have had tears coming down ever since Rongo left. Tipu feels torn. Tipu knows that he should be loyal to his mother's iwi and stay with her since Rongo has already left. But Tipu heard news going around that George has been killed and he wants to be with his brother more than ever.

Michael: In 1915 3rd of August Rahia was reading Rongos letter. Whaea always told Rahia to read it out loud most days. They wrote it in May and sent it from egypt, and the postmarks show that it travelled to England. Rongo, doing the haka his brother describes shirtless under the north african sun. Tipu knows that his mother is leaning in his direction. Whaea’s voice is stony and hard, but her eyes are shiny with the tears that have been there since the day Rongo left. Tipu feels torn. But Tipu knows that he should be loyal to his mother’s iwi, that Tipu shall stay with his mother now that Rongo is gone. But news had spread about Gallipoli. Big George has been killed over there. Tipu wants to be there with his brother Rongo more than anything else. Tipu felt sad and lonely since his brother is gone to ww1.

Railey: on the 3rd of august 1915 Rahia was reading all the letters from Rongo, and he was always told to read it out loud. The letter was written in May, and was sent to Egypt, and to England that Tipu has never known about. Tipu has read Rongo’s letters so many times,  he didn't even need to listen to it, instead he’d emagine him being with his brother doing the haka in the war.

Davlyn: the 3rd of august 1915, Tipu was reading Rongo’s letter that was made in may and made in egypt, but the letter had travelled through england. Tipu already read the same letter too many times, but this time he did not listen, instead he imagined that he was at war with his brother doing the haka. Tipu was torn to notbe with his brother.

Eh Htoo: 3 August 1915 Rahia is reading his brother's letter. The letter was written many times. Tipu has heard Rongo’s letter lots of times, and sometimes he did not listen. He would dream of doing the haka in the hot african sun with Rongo. But Tupi heard his mother and listened to it and he should stay home. In Britain in Egypt they have taken the land of native people off that country. People heard from the one you said big George died in. Gallipoli.

Predator Free 2050 summary in our own words

Predator Free 2050
85 million years ago NZ was one of the first countries to split apart from Gondwanaland. Gondwanaland is when all the land in the whole Earth was together in one big country - they split up and became the continents. This meant that the only mammals NZ has, either swan here or flew here.

Because NZ is an island with no mammals, the birds, insects etc became defenseless (because they had no predators to hide from). Maori and Europeans settlers killed lots of animals, and brought with them predators from other countries (for example possums, rats, stoats, dogs).

Those predators brought here by settlers, have destroyed our native birds/plants. NZ has one of the worst extinction records of any nation in the world.

NZ has been trying to control the pests by using traps, poisoning but it hasn’t really worked. We need to work together to control the pests.

It is everyone’s responsibility to control pests and protect native species - all New Zealanders.
